I’m in the middle of a storm. Literally and metaphorically.

I’m barely aware of the rain pelting my back as I use a finger to tilt her chin up, and I don’t feel the wind as I press my lips to hers. But it’s the storm inside me that’s raging out of control when she kisses me back. Tentatively at first, and then with more confidence.

Soon she’s kissing me like she does everything in life—with authority. This fearless girl is exploring my mouth, tasting my lips, tilting her head as she figures out how we fit together.

Perfectly. That’s how we fit.

Even at this awkward angle, sitting side by side and sheltering from a storm, it’s perfect. When she sighs against my lips, I feel it everywhere. This ache. This need. This...affection.

I don’t know how else to describe the tight swelling in my chest that’s linked to the heat coursing through me. It’s connected to it, but it’s not the same. This isn’t just physical desire, it’s something more.

Her lips are so soft, I can barely stand it. I want to crush her to me even as I want to make sure I don’t hurt her. I want to tug her closer, touch her everywhere. But I don’t want to rush her, and I don’t want to send her running. So I stay still. I let her lead. I follow her rhythm as she nips at my bottom lip and teasingly touches her tongue to mine, sending a jolt of electricity straight through to my spine.

When she shifts, lifting her hands and settling them on my chest, I groan at the sweet torture of it all. I could kiss her for hours. I could stay on this little island for the rest of my life and just kiss her.

But when she pulls back, I let her go. I watch in awe as she looks back at me with dazed eyes and draws in a deep, shaky breath, touching her fingers to her lips. I watch with that weird, aching sensation in my chest as her gaze focuses, as she comes back to reality. And I know.

I know that she felt it too. The perfection. The connection.

And that…

Well, that’s freaking terrifying. At least, I have no idea what to make of this new thing between us. It feels fragile, and I don’t trust myself to say a word.

So we just sit there. We huddle together, I wrap both arms around her in an attempt to keep her warm, and we stare at the lake as the last of rain hits before moving on.

In what feels like no time at all the storm cloud has passed, the lake is calm, and Mara and I are back to reality. A few more seconds of silence after the rain stops, and I’m starting to doubt any of that really happened.

I mean, it did. I know it did. But I don’t know what it means.

Or if it means anything at all.

“Should we…” Mara glances over at me and her expression is uncharacteristically hesitant.
